Relaxation Massage
There are several forms of relaxation massage. The benefits of relaxation are many fold. It has been estimated that up to 90% of chronic illnesses are caused by long-term stress, and symptoms are the result of the eventual inability of the body to cope with this stress. A relaxation massage starts to reduce the stress levels in the body, allowing the healing process to start.
Relaxation massage can be mostly focussed on the skin and just below the skin, this will have the effect of soothing the nervous system, of stimulating the lymphatic system which is beneficial for those that are sensitive to touch or are in a state of anxiety. The skin is an organ which is intimately associated with the nervous system and so stimulating the skin releases hormones such as endorphins which are the body’s natural pain killers. Some people describe massage as a method for receiving "touch vitamins". Our first body sense is the sense of touch, and through touch we can feel reassurance and love. Many people in our society are touch deprived and a massage goes a long way to restoring this balance.
A deeper relaxation massage can be obtained by working through the different layers of muscle to access the deep tissue layers and this can be profoundly satisfying for the whole body. Opening and relaxing the tissues to this depth can have a significant effect on lowering blood pressure as the circulation is opened up and allowed to flow more freely. This type of massage will also stimulate the lymphatic system and assist in detoxifying the body and boosting the immune system.
